Pilates for Mummies: Prenatal & Postnatal Pilates in Singapore

Struggling to find prenatal and postnatal Pilates studios in Singapore? I’ve been there! Sifting through endless Google searches and contacting studios one by one to check their class offerings was a real hassle.

To save you the same frustration, I’ve compiled this list of studios in Singapore that cater specifically to expecting and new mothers. Whether you’re a complete beginner or seasoned Pilates pro, you’re sure to find the perfect fit to support your body throughout your motherhood journey.

Caveat: Unlike most of my recommendations on my blog, I’ve obviously not tried out all these Pilates studios during my pregnancy or postpartum journey! Please feel free to let me know if you have other trusted recommendations based on your personal experiences to add to this list!

Why Pilates? Benefits I Experienced!

If you’ve stumbled across this article by mistake, let me give a quick shout out about the benefits of prenatal & postnatal pilates and why I’m such an advocate.

I personally came across pilates as a form of exercise recommended by my physiotherapist whom I was seeing for a chronic back issue pre-pregnancy. At the start, as a person who does ZERO exercise (I don’t even walk much on a daily basis), I was reluctant and sceptical about starting pilates. But 4 years on, I’m a 100% convert.

Benefits of Pilates in General:

Here are some personal benefits I’ve experienced across the time I’ve practiced pilates (before, during and after my pregnancy):

  • Pre-pregnancy: A few weeks into pilates exercises (I went 1-2 times a month), my chronic back issue improved significantly. A few months into it, I even got an ab line and my hunch back issue also improved. As such, I continued for about 1.5 years until covid hit and I stopped.
  • Pregnancy: Shortly into pregnancy, I started experiencing the all familiar back aches, with even more other body aches. Hence I turned to what I knew best – pilates. But to be extra safe, I decided to go only for a studio that had trainers certified in training pregnant women. I went for regular weekly classes around Wk 22 all the way till Wk 35. It helped so much, I stopped going for my weekly massages to alleviate all my body aches.
  • Post-pregnancy: I only started going back to pilates at 11 months postpartum (yes it took a while but I had other more pressing priorities then!). Can’t comment much yet as I’ve not started a super regular routine – which I’m hoping to. But I do expect a lot of benefits just like my previous experiences.

Editor POV: I was with Breathe throughout my pregnancy doing private classes and found some of their prenatal trained instructors (Rika, Charibelle, & Chloe) very experienced and helpful! They knew how to modify exercises to accommodate my limitations safely and went at a pace that I could follow. They are very popular though and it could be difficult to book classes – so you have to book quite far in advance.
