A balanced breakfast doesn’t need to be complicated, especially with my easy toddler breakfast recipes! Despite navigating the challenges of picky eating during my toddler’s journey with solids for lunches and dinners, breakfast has fortunately been a breeze in our home.

This guide, with some illustrated examples, will walk you through creating healthy and quick breakfast options to fuel your toddler’s day!

Caveat: While I do the planning of the menu, buying of the ingredients, I’m fortunate to have a very competent helper to bake and prep the meals for me! Nonetheless, I still try to find fuss-free options to minimize effort on everyone’s part!

Why a Balanced Breakfast Matters for Toddlers

As a mum, you want to start your toddler’s day with energy and nutrients that support their growth and keep them happy and satisfied. A balanced breakfast fuels their morning, helps maintain stable energy levels, and keeps their little tummies content until their next meal. With so many quick breakfast ideas out there, I created a straightforward formula for our household that makes breakfast prep easy, nutritious, and fun. If you’re having trouble figuring out what to serve your toddler daily for breakfast why not give this easy toddler breakfast recipes formula a go!

Easy Toddler Breakfast Recipes: My Easy Breakfast Formula

Easy Toddler Breakfast Recipes: My Easy Toddler Breakfast Formula

After spending lots of time analysing the total recommended servings in a day by Singapore’s Health Hub (see table below), and a lot of trial and error with my little one, here’s my ideal breakfast formula now:

  • 1/4 Serving of Carbs (with some vegetables): Carbohydrates give a burst of energy to keep toddlers active. Also because she eats well at breakfast, I don’t stress out so much when she doesn’t finish her carbs at lunch or dinner. Additionally, I often incorporate veggies with her carbs here, though she gets more at lunch and dinner.
  • 1/2 to 1 Serving of Fruits: Fruits add natural sweetness, vitamins, and fibre. For us, breakfast is her main serving of fruits for the whole day.
  • Very small Serving of Protein Protein supports growth (boy does my short little girl need it!) and provides lasting fullness. Since she gets more protein later in the day, I keep it light in the morning. My choices of protein you’ll see later are more for other purposes like probiotics and calcium.

The best part of this formula? It is is SUPER time-saving. My carbs are often pre-prepared (just need to be heated up), fruits are quick to slice & prep, and proteins require little to no preparation at all. It’s a win-win for any busy parent!

Easy Toddler Breakfast Recipes For Carbohydrates

For breakfast carbs, I opt for recipes that are easy to make ahead, reheat quickly, or require minimal prep. I have a few different options that we alternate between days so there’s enough variety to keep baby interested! Here are a few carb ideas that my toddler loves, and each has some added nutritional benefits:

Mini Pancakes

Easy Toddler Breakfast Recipes: Banana Oatmeal Pancake

My helper makes these with oatmeal flour and sometimes blend in spinach for a veggie boost. They’re easy to prepare in batches and freeze well. These below are some of our top go to options! We make quite a few at one go, and keep it in our chest freezer.

Recipes I Use & Love

Muffins

Easy Toddler Breakfast Recipes: Blueberry muffins

With so many flavour possibilities, you can try them out with fruits your LO loves! They can be made in SOOOOO many flavours. Banana, blueberry, strawberry, carrot, and even spinach muffins make great, nutrient-dense options. They’re easy to bake in bulk and can be defrosted quickly.

Usually I’ll adjust accordingly and ignore any added salt/sugar/syrups/essence even if the recipe calls for it. But that’s just me!

Recipes I Use & Love

Vegetable Fritters

Easy Toddler Breakfast Recipes: Vegetable Fritters

I like to make these with grated carrots, zucchini, and a touch of broccoli. And sometimes beans, or chickpeas for added protein. They’re veggie-packed and delicious! Also great finger food options for lunch/dinner too!

Usually if there’s cheese in the recipe, I will not keep it for long (usually to be eaten within 2-3 days). If there’s no dairy, then I’ll batch freeze it for longer. But that’s just me!

Recipes I Use & Love

Wholemeal Toast

Easy Toddler Breakfast Recipes: Toast

Perfect for busy mornings. I sometimes top it with a bit of jam (for variety). But most of the time baby girl loves it plain. My helper normally air fries wholemeal sliced bread to get them to a slightly hardened toasty state that easier for baby girl to eat.

Here are some easy homemade jams you can make to avoid all the nasty preservatives and added sugars from store-bought ones. Tip: Only apply a thin layer, else the toast could get soggy (my girl hates it that way).

Recipes I Use & Love

For the younger ones (< 12 months): When she was younger, we started with simple carbs like quinoa powder or oatmeal, alongside toast for variety. These options helped develop her palate and kept her full until her next meal. Then we slowly introduced muffins and more variety after.

Easy Toddler Breakfast Fruits

For breakfast fruits, I usually pick options that are quick to prep and toddler-friendly. You can even prepare them the night before so there’s no rush in the morning. I’m not attaching images because there’s already plenty of good resources where you can find how to serve them – Solids Starts’s free database being one of them! Here are some of our regular go-to fruits:

FruitsMy Way of Serving
AppleSteamed until soft and cut into smaller bite sized pieces (I don’t serve with skin on)

Recently at 16months, we started serving her in very thin slices raw.
AvocadoCut into smaller bite sized pieces or wedges for BLW
BananaCut into halves or wedges for BLW. Although now she also like to take bites directly from the peeled banana.
BlueberrySkin peeled/unpeeled and smashed (so it’s not round shaped).
Dragon fruitCut into smaller bite sized pieces
GrapesSkin peeled and cut into quarters
KiwiCut into smaller bite sized pieces
PearSteamed until soft and cut into smaller bite sized pieces (I don’t serve with skin on)

More Fruit Tips

Why are these our staple fruits? Because they are easily available at our nearby market and we like to have a variety. She also gets other types of fruits like blackberry, honeydews, plums, strawberries and more, when we happen to buy them on our grocery runs.

If your baby is a picky eater, you could even use cookie cutters for fun shapes. Fortunately, I’ve been lucky that my toddler isn’t fussed about presentation…yet!

For the younger ones (< 12 months): When she was younger, I would puree or scrape fruits for her. Or soften them enough and modify it for her to safely BLW, sometime in a feeder. This approach made it easier for her to enjoy a variety of textures and flavours while learning to enjoy her fruits.

Easy Breakfast Proteins For Toddlers

Adding protein for breakfast doesn’t need to be complicated. My go-to choices are yogurt and cheese, which are packed with protein and probiotics that support digestion. And also the occasional egg.

Easy Proteins Brands I Use
Yogurt: I choose unsweetened and unflavoured plain Greek yoghurt varieties to avoid extra sugars. Also great source of natural probiotics!Farmers Union Greek Style All Natural Yoghurt
I get it in the simple 2 X 140g pack because anything larger we wouldn’t finish in time.
Cheese: There’s a wide variety of cheeses out there suitable for kids. While I don’t give a lot of it, I try to look out for low-sodium options.Galbani Mascarpone Cheese
Greenfields Ricotta Cheese
Arla Mozzarella Shredded Cheese (I use this for fritters or pancakes at times too!)
Egg: If your kid doesn’t take to yoghurts or cheeses just yet, can consider egg as an easy protein too – I normally give it as an omelette but sliced up into thin strips.Nuyolk Vitamins Enriched Eggs (10 pcs) – I try to get this when I can. If not I’m not fussed about the brand.
My Choice of Easy Breakfast Proteins

The best part? These protein choices are ready-to-eat and don’t require any cooking (or much cooking for eggs). They pair beautifully with the carbs and fruits, adding a creamy texture that’s easy for toddlers to eat.

The only thing to note? That these have a short shelf life. So unless your household are big eaters of these proteins, I would recommend to buy them in small sizes, and buy them frequently for maximum freshness.

Bonus Tips for Making Breakfasts with Your Toddler Fuss-Free

Breakfast doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are a few tips to make it easier for you and more enjoyable for your toddler:

  • Adjust Portion Sizes: Keep portions small and manageable for little hands (and your expectations)! Slowly increase portion size if baby seems to finish well instead of overwhelming them at the start.
  • Use Fun Plates or Shapes: Some toddlers respond well to fun, colourful plates or shapes. Sectioned plates are great for introducing different foods.
  • Adapt for Allergies: If your child has allergies, you can swap ingredients (e.g., dairy-free yogurt for yogurt, or gluten-free toast options).
  • Set a Designated Time to Stop: I decided on a hard stop of 30 minutes for mealtimes (breakfast included) when mealtimes were dragging to beyond 1 hour. This way I don’t get overly stressed that mealtimes are taking too long than necessary.
  • Eat Only at The Table: This is a personal preference. I don’t like the idea of chasing after my kid to feed her. So she learnt from early on we only eat at the dining table. If she’s done, and signals or says “All Done”, we will clean her up and remove her from the high chair and there’s no more feeding.

Hope these tips can help make breakfast a smooth, positive experience for both you and your toddler!

I hope this guide helps you plan quick, healthy breakfast ideas that your toddler will love! Don’t forget to mix up the combinations to keep things interesting. If you try out this formula, I’d love to hear how it works for you and your little one in the comments below or over on our Instagram!
