Why Are Baby’s First Shoes Important?

Let’s start with the obvious: Why do I need a guide for picking baby shoes for walking? Aren’t shoes just shoes? Can’t I just get something cute or easily accessible in baby size and be done with it? Well… it’s not so simple – not if you care about your baby’s development and comfort.

The transition from crawling to walking is a big step in your baby’s development. The right shoes play a crucial role in supporting their growing feet, enhancing balance, and ensuring comfort. Here’s 5 strong reasons on why choosing the right baby shoes matters:

1) Support Healthy Foot Development:

Babies’ feet are still developing, with soft bones and cartilage that can easily be moulded by ill-fitting shoes. Proper shoes provide the necessary support without restricting natural growth, helping to ensure that their feet develop correctly.

2) Promote Balance and Stability:

Good shoes help babies maintain their balance as they take their first steps. Shoes with flexible soles and proper grip encourage natural movement and prevent slips and falls, which is essential as they build confidence in walking.

3) Ensure Comfort:

Poorly fitting shoes can cause blisters, chafing, and discomfort, making it harder for babies to enjoy their new mobility. In serious cases, ill-fitting shoes can even cause deformities in young children’s feet. Hence, the importance of finding comfortable shoes with the right fit.

4) Protect Delicate Feet:

Babies’ feet are delicate and need protection from rough surfaces, sharp objects, and extreme temperatures. Well-made shoes act as a barrier, keeping their feet safe while they explore their surroundings. However, it is also important to note that the American Podiatrist Medical Association recommends that young toddlers DO NOT need to wear shoes INDOORS.

5) Encourage Proper Posture and Walking Mechanics:

The right shoes help babies develop proper posture and walking mechanics from the start. Shoes that are too rigid or have improper arch support can lead to poor walking habits, which may cause issues with posture and movement as they grow.

What to Look for in Baby’s First Walking Shoes?

Convinced about the importance in finding proper baby walking shoes for your little one? The next step is how to go about it. Well, choosing the perfect pair of baby walking shoes involves considering several factors. Here are some important things that podiatrists (foot experts!) recommend looking out for:

Comfort & Fit:

  • The shoes should fit snugly but not too tight, allowing room for growth.
  • Ensure there’s enough space (about a thumb’s width) between the toes and the front of the shoe.
  • Shoes should be made of materials that allow air circulation to keep your baby’s feet dry and comfortable. Avoid materials that are prone to trap moisture and cause discomfort.

Flexibility:

  • The shoes should have flexible soles that bend easily to allow natural foot movement.
  • Check for toe flexibility. The shoe should bend at the ball of the foot, aligning with where your child’s toes naturally flex. It should be neither too stiff, which can restrict movement, nor too flexible, which can lead to instability.
  • Avoid rigid shoes, which can restrict a baby’s foot development and walking mechanics.

Support:

  • Look for shoes with a supportive structure, especially around the ankles, to help stabilize your baby’s steps. How to test? Press on both sides of the heel area of the shoe, it should hold up and not collapse.
  • In most cases, babies do not need a special arch support.

Non-Slip Soles:

  • Choose shoes with non-slip or rubber soles to provide traction and prevent slips and falls.
  • Ensure the soles are thin enough to allow your baby to feel the ground, which aids in balance.
  • Avoid heels on their shoes. Flat outer soles are easier for walking.

Lightweight Design:

  • Shoes should be lightweight to avoid weighing down your baby’s feet, which can hinder walking.
  • A light design encourages natural movement and makes it easier for your baby to lift their feet.

Easy Fastenings:

  • Opt for shoes with Velcro straps or other forms of easy fastenings that secure the shoes well and make them easy to put on and take off.
  • Avoid complicated laces or buckles that may be difficult to manage with a wiggly baby.

Proper Sizing:

  • Regularly measure your baby’s feet and choose the right size; avoid buying shoes that are too big to “grow into.” According to foot experts at the National Childbirth Trust, young toddlers may require new pairs of shoes every 2-3months (up until 2.5 years old) as they grow rapidly.
  • Check for signs that the shoes are either too tight or too loose, such as red marks on the feet or frequent tripping.

Durability:

Consider the quality of the materials and stitching to ensure the shoes can withstand daily wear and tear.
While babies outgrow shoes quickly, durable shoes ensure safety and comfort during their use.

Design and Style:

While aesthetics are secondary to function, choosing a design that is both practical and visually appealing can be a bonus. Ensure that any decorative elements do not pose a choking hazard or affect the shoe’s functionality.

Together, these factors are key to ensuring that the shoes you select for your baby provide the necessary support, comfort, and protection as they take their early steps.

#MummyApproved: Best Baby Walking Shoes in Singapore

Now that you know what to look out for, where can you find the best baby walking shoes in Singapore? With so many baby shoe brands out there, it can get overwhelming. To help you narrow down your search, here are some baby walking shoe brands that come highly recommended by myself and other mummies I’ve polled as well as some interesting brands that have caught my eye to try next!

Tip Toe Joey (Brazil Baby Shoe Brand)

If you’re on the hunt for the perfect first walking shoes for your baby, Tip Toey Joey is a top pick among mummies here in Singapore. So many mummies in my mummy groups recommended these that I had to go down to the shop to try it for myself (or rather on my LO).

These shoes are super comfy with their soft, flexible leather that gently hugs your baby’s feet, giving them the freedom to move naturally. Not to mention, they’re cute enough to pair with any outfit. If you want shoes that blend style, comfort, and practicality, Tip Toey Joey has got you covered!

Editor’s note: While I managed to try it on for my baby, I did not end up getting it as the smallest size was still too big for her feet then. Given the price, I decided to look around at other options first. A strong contender for her second pair of shoes though!

What mums love about it? Durable, easy to wear, soft

What’s not so nice? The price

Pricing – SGD 69 onwards

Attipas (South Korea Baby Shoe Brand)

Bought my girl her first pair of shoes – brought her foot tracing with me!

Here’s another strong #mumapproved contender for best baby walking shoes in Singapore – Attipas! These sock-shoes are a hit in Korea (“number 1 selling baby shoes in Korea”), and it’s easy to see why. They’re not just super cute with many designs but also designed to be ergonomic, comfy, and incredibly easy to slip on and off. Plus, they’re machine washable—so handy for busy parents!

Not only that, they are backed by seven years of research from Seoul National University’s Motor Development Center, ensuring they promote healthy foot development while mimicking the feel of walking barefoot. The perfect balance of protection and flexibility for those precious first steps.

Editor’s note: I went with this for my little one’s first pair of walking shoes because of the fact that it hit all if not most of the points I was looking out for – and also had cute designs plus was super affordable to boot! However, I’ve also taken note that there isn’t too much ankle support – so while it’s a great first pair of shoes, I’ll be changing out to another pair soon, as she’s walking/running around more.

What mums love about it? Easy to wear (like a sock), machine washable, affordable

What’s not so nice? Not many formal options, only two sizes M (115mm) & L (125mm), not much ankle support

Pricing – SGD 37 onwards

Editor’s note: I also went down to the store to try this brand of shoes because how could I not after all the raving reviews. But again baby’s feet were too small for the smallest size then, so I didn’t get any yet given the price. Also a strong contender for her second pair of shoes!

Where to find it in Singapore?

Miki House (Japan Baby Shoe Brand)

Miki House is a brand that has been dedicated to supporting children’s growth and development for over 30 years, focusing on the unique needs of little feet. Though not as commonly mentioned as the other brands, likely due to its price point, Miki House is worth considering if you’re willing to splurge. Otherwise, it’s supposedly much cheaper in Japan if you’re travelling anytime soon!

According to their website, they meticulously design their shoes to accommodate a baby’s foot shape, and accommodate baby’s unique walking styles. Whether your child is just beginning to walk, running around, or even taking big jumps, Miki House offers a variety of shoes to suit their stage of development.

Editor’s note: I like what I see on their website – particularly the insights into why they incorporated each feature. But it’s definitely way out of my budget for baby shoes. So unless I head to Japan soon, unlikely for baby to get to try this.

What mums love about it? Exceptional quality and cute designs

What’s not so nice? The price

Pricing – SGD 220 (First Step shoes)

  • Freycoo – Could not find an official website or much information about the manufacturer or brand.
  • Katetu – While there’s an official Malaysian website, I could not find much information about their presence globally or more details about their products. Nonetheless, they have a physical store in United Square, so you can go check it out yourself in person!

Tips for Measuring Your Baby’s Feet

Accurate measurements ensure that your baby’s shoes fit properly. Here’s how to do it:

How to Measure at Home

  1. Prepare Your Workspace
    • Flat Surface: Place a piece of paper on a flat, hard surface, like a floor or table. Make sure the paper is large enough to accommodate your baby’s foot.
  2. Get Your Baby Ready
    • Standing Position: Gently encourage your baby to stand on the paper with their full weight on the foot being measured. This helps get an accurate measurement as it reflects the actual foot size when weight-bearing.
  3. Trace the Foot
    • Pencil Position: Hold a pencil perpendicular to the paper, and carefully trace around your baby’s foot. Keep the pencil as close to the foot as possible to avoid extra space. Ensure the tracing is accurate by keeping the pencil steady and close to the foot’s edge.
  4. Measure the Length
    • Heel to Toe: Using a ruler or measuring tape, measure the distance from the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Note down this measurement in centimeters or inches, depending on your preference.
  5. Compare with Sizing Charts
    • Find the Right Size: Use a baby shoe sizing chart to match the measured length with the appropriate shoe size. Most brands provide sizing charts on their websites, which can help you select the correct size for your baby.

Head to Retailers for Professional Measuring

Looks too complicated to DIY? Baby not cooperative? Consider visiting a retailer that offers professional measuring services for additional accuracy and convenience. These stores often use specialized tools and have trained staff to ensure a perfect fit:

By taking these steps, you can ensure your baby’s shoes fit well and support their healthy foot development, making those early steps a bit more comfortable and enjoyable.

FAQs About Baby’s First Walking Shoes

Can my baby wear second-hand shoes?
It’s best to avoid second-hand shoes as they may have already moulded to someone else’s feet, which could affect fit and support.

What’s the difference between pre-walking and walking shoes?
Pre-walking shoes are designed for babies who are crawling or just starting to stand, offering minimal support and flexibility. Walking shoes provide more support and cushioning for active walkers.

Is barefoot better for early walking?
While barefoot walking is natural and beneficial, shoes are important when outdoors or on rough surfaces to protect little feet. Choose shoes that allow for natural foot movement.

How often should I replace my baby’s shoes?
As your baby’s feet grow rapidly, it’s recommended to check their shoe size every 2-3 months and replace shoes as needed. It’s time to size up if you notice the current pair is becoming too tight or uncomfortable.

How to see if baby shoes are too small or too big?
Too Small: Red marks, blisters, or discomfort are signs the shoes are too small.
Too Big: If your baby’s feet slip or slide inside the shoes, they may be too big.
